at the People's Choice Awards show in Los Angeles.
"Thank you so much. This is such a great way to start the new year,"
Witherspoon, who starred in "Four Christmases,"
said as she collected her prize.

Will Smith won the favorite male movie star and male action star awards,
while Angelina Jolie took the favorite female action star gong
and her real-life partner Brad Pitt won the favorite leading man honor.

Despite her thriving romance, 32-year-old Witherspoon,
who divorced husband Ryan Phillipe in 2007,
has said that the ghost of her failed marriage still haunts her.

"There are things in my life that are hard to reconcile, like divorce,"
she told Parade in November.
"Sometimes it is very difficult to make sense of how it could possibly happen."

The actress reunited with Gyllenhaal - and old friend of her ex -
on the set of their flop espionage thriller, "Rendition"
and have been dating since April 2007.

But she says there are no plans for a trip down the aisle anytime soon:
"At the moment, I am not far enough out of being married
to think about doing it again."

teacher accused of having sex with student

A Campbell County teacher is out on bond this afternoon,
accused of having sex with 16-year-old boy.
Nicole Howell is charged with sex abuse.

Howell teaches English at Dayton High School.
In an interview with Covington police, the 16-year-old said Howell
called him on his cell phone and invited him over to her house.
The teen says the two had sex, and that she told him not to tell anyone.

The teenager says he and Howell had sex on four or five other occasions.
The alleged incidents happened between September and November
of last year at Howell's Covington residence.

Administrators at an Indiana hospital said one of the three numbers
listed for the hospital in the latest AT&T phone book
connects callers to a phone sex line.

Matt French, vice president of business development and marketing
at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington, said the 32-bed hospital has received
about a dozen calls since the phone book was released last week
from residents concerned about the misprinted number,
the Bloomington Herald-Times reported Wednesday.

"Some say they are surprised,"
he said.
"Others say they want to know how in the world it happened.
We'd like to know as well."

"We'd like to work with the publisher to see if there's anything
that can be done," he said.
"But because the books are already out there, I'm not sure what that might be."

An AT&T corporate spokesman said he was investigating
the origin of the mistaken number,
which is the third listed for the hospital in the book.

that state law does not bar teachers from having sex with 18-year-old students.

The decision came from a three-judge panel of the Washington Court of Appeals,
which on Tuesday ordered the dismissal of a case brought against
Hoquiam High School's former choir teacher.

The teacher, Matthew Hirschfelder, was charged with first-degree
sexual misconduct with a minor. He challenged a judge's refusal to dismiss his case.
The appeals court unanimously agreed that the state law is vague
and that the Legislature intended to forbid only sexual contact between
school employees and students who are 16 or 17.

Hirschfelder was 33 in 2006, at the time of the alleged relationship
with the young woman. He resigned the next year.
